COVID-19 Policy

Safe and Healthy Volunteering

We take the responsibility of providing a safe and healthy volunteer environment very seriously.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with The Ark!

The Ark values the gift of time made by its volunteers. We maintain high standards in the way we involve volunteers, and we recognize the importance of volunteers to the programs and services that we provide to the community.

We take the responsibility of providing as safe and healthy volunteer environment as possible very seriously. As our medical advisory staff is working with guidance provided by the CDC, IDPH, and the City of Chicago, COVID-related protocols are being updated as often as needed.

Our current COVID-related protocols are as follows:

  • All in person volunteers will be asked to show proof of vaccination, which includes the full series (depending upon manufacturer) + one booster shot. Please be prepared to show your COVID Vaccine Card or a photo of your card the next time you volunteer or drive with us.
  • A high-quality mask that covers the nose and mouth must be worn at all times while volunteering inside or outside of the Ark building. If you do not have one, we can provide a KN95 mask for you when you volunteer.
  • Please wash and/or sanitize your hands frequently when volunteering. This can ward off communicable illnesses, including cold and flu, which can also be easily transmitted while working indoors.
  • Any food eaten while inside The Ark must be done so in a private area where social distancing can be maintained.
  • If you are feeling sick in any way, please let our Volunteer Coordinator know ASAP, and stay home. We want you to be well, and to protect those around you.
  • If you receive a positive test for COVID-19 after working inside The Ark, please let our Volunteer Coordinator or Director of Community Engagement and Education know ASAP.

We will do our best to:

  • provide an enjoyable and rewarding experience
  • keep you informed and consulted on relevant changes
  • meet our health and safety responsibilities toward you
  • apply our equal opportunities policy

We expect you as a volunteer to:

  • be reliable and to perform your volunteer role to the best of your ability
  • listen to all safety protocols and continue volunteering with respect
  • not sign up for a shift if you are not willing or able to follow our current COVID safety protocols
