Ruth and Phil Gross:
Ark Volunteer Spotlight

Ruth and Phil Gross’ connection to The Ark is deeply intertwined with their personal and professional lives. Their journey began when a social worker at The Ark set them up on a blind date—a hockey game at a pub near Loyola University. Decades later, their bond and dedication remain as strong as ever, as they continue to find purpose through community service.
“The Ark is more than a human services agency. It’s a home away from home, for the clients and for us.”
Phil devoted 38 years to The Ark as a social worker, providing direct client services and helping to bring impactful programs to life, including a volunteer training initiative for psychological services guided by Dr. Robert Roth, PhD, z”l. Now retired, he warmly welcomes clients as a greeter in The Ark’s modernized building. “Sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that make the biggest difference,” he shares, recalling a client’s apprehension about his first dental visit in 25 years. Phil walked him to the clinic, stayed to chat in the waiting area, and offered steady encouragement that made a daunting visit feel more manageable.
Ruth’s connection with The Ark began when she started volunteering at the original Devon Avenue location and continued to grow alongside her career in nursing. Over the years, she has served holiday meals, assisted with Torah learning sessions, and stepped in as a substitute receptionist. Now, Ruth is a cornerstone of The Ark’s pantry program, where she greets clients four days a week, assists with orders, and ensures appointments run smoothly. “The relationships we build here create a sense of community,” she reflects. “Knowing someone remembers you and cares about your needs can transform an experience.”
In 2024, Ruth’s outstanding dedication was recognized with The Ark’s annual award for exemplary service. Together, Ruth and Phil have found a community at The Ark that brings fulfillment to their lives while helping others.
