Shifra Kolsky brings more than two decades of experience in accounting, financial reporting, and controllership. She currently serves as U.S. Chief Accountant and Controller at BMO. Previously, she spent 16 years at Discover Financial Services, where she rose to Senior Vice President, Controller, and Chief Accounting Officer.  

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, Shifra has led complex financial organizations and helped strengthen financial operations, governance, and transparency. She is also committed to the Jewish community and to supporting individuals and families in need. Through her professional experience and volunteer leadership, Shifra brings strong financial expertise and a desire to serve the broader community. 

We asked Shifra to share what drew her to The Ark and the values that shape her approach to leadership and service.

1. What drew you to The Ark, and what are you most looking forward to as a member of the Board? 

I was raised in a family where community service was a deeply held value and we were encouraged to find our own meaningful ways to contribute.  I was drawn to The Ark because of its holistic approach to supporting people and its commitment to serving the whole Jewish community. I’m looking forward to sharing my own skills and expertise while learning from and working alongside others with a shared purpose. 

2. What principle from your professional or volunteer experience guides your approach to leadership and service? 

I believe people do their best work when their different strengths, experiences, and perspectives are valued and brought together around a common purpose.  Throughout my career, I’ve seen that the strongest outcomes come from creating an environment where people can contribute what they do best and accomplish more together than any one person can do alone.
