Michael Smith is a financial and operational executive with decades of experience helping companies navigate periods of growth, transformation, and turnaround. He is the founder and managing director of Norwood Advisors, LLP, where he provides interim and fractional CFO services to companies facing complex financial and operational challenges.  

Throughout his career, Michael has worked across a range of industries, helping businesses improve performance, complete strategic transactions, and build long-term value. Before founding Norwood Advisors, he held senior leadership roles at Marbles: The Brain Store, Revolution Dancewear, Collins Brothers, and Cobra Electronics.  

Michael earned an MBA in Finance from The George Washington University School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Miami. He is committed to community leadership and Jewish causes and will bring his financial knowledge, business experience, and dedication to service to The Ark’s Board of Directors. 

We asked Michael to share what drew him to The Ark and the leadership principles that shape his approach to community service. 

1. What drew you to The Ark, and what are you most excited to contribute as a member of the Board? 

The Ark is an essential resource for the Chicago-area Jewish community where one out of five Jewish families are struggling to keep their heads above water. As needs increase with the shredding of the social safety net and the disruptions we are facing through the technological change, it is essential that we expand our resources and capabilities.  

2. Is there a leadership principle or lesson that has shaped your approach to community service? 

As lay leaders, we are responsible for listening, learning and challenging our professional team. Each of us brings unique life experiences through which we can view and enhance the mission and operations of the community service organizations for which we volunteer.
