Finding Stability After Job Loss:
Daniel’s Story
People had recommended that Daniel go to The Ark after he lost his job of 10 years, but he dismissed the idea each time it came up. He had heard about The Ark since he was a child, and strongly believed it wasn’t for “people like him.” He was confident that an offer would be made soon and tried to remain calm and confident. But after another six months went by without a job offer, Daniel hesitantly walked through The Ark doors for assistance. Meeting with The Ark Employment Coach was difficult for him. He was angry, scared, frustrated, and felt no one could really provide new or constructive information. After all, he was a well-educated person, making a good living and had always been self-sufficient—until now. He was surprised when The Ark’s professional Coach didn’t leap into his employment issues, but rather, spent the time having a conversation and getting to know him.
“The Career Coach immediately started a conversation, rather than an interrogation. She provided suggestions and options without pointing a finger or diminishing my search methods. I felt the tension slowly disappear and I actually started to trust this person.” Success did not happen overnight, but all future meetings were dedicated to helping him establish a professional identity, revise and strengthen his resume, share interview tips, negotiate salary, and more. “I found myself looking forward to meeting with my Coach. I came in with a lot of negativity and doubts, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.” Daniel was also impressed with the quality of the staff working at The Ark. “I discovered a depth of support I never expected. Now I understand when I hear pride is overrated. It definitely delayed my moving forward.”
The Ark Employment Services gave Daniel life-long tools to not only help him secure a job, but helped him cope in a number of different life situations. Although it definitely took time, Daniel started to believe in The Ark, and we believed in him. He worked hard and as a result, is now working full-time and in a position that recognizes and rewards his skills. Most importantly, Daniel is recapturing his confidence and self-esteem. Though the road wasn’t easy, Daniel takes pride in who he has become. “Looking for a job is exhausting. I’m so happy I finally chose not to do it on my own.”
