The Ark is Hiring: Development Manager

The Ark, a vibrant social service agency serving Chicagoland’s Jewish community for more than 50 years, is seeking an experienced Development Manager to support the Ark’s $6 million+ annual fundraising programs, an ongoing $20 million capital campaign, and long-term legacy and endowment initiatives. As a key member of a growing, 5-person team, the Development Manager will coordinate day-to-day activities of the individual giving program. This is a full time, salaried position and will report to the Director of Development

The Development Manager will focus on individual giving efforts, retaining and growing The Ark’s annual donor base of more than 6,000 and helping build a robust leadership giving program with specific benchmarks, acquisition and upgrade strategies, and stewardship. The Development Manager will support all leadership fundraising efforts and projects and play a key role in the public phase of The Ark’s capital campaign. Success is determined by campaign execution, meeting budgeted dollar and participation targets, and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with donors, volunteers, colleagues, and partners.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Meet budget goals and performance metrics for qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of leadership annual gifts of $1,800-10,000
  • Actively work with donors to identify areas of interest and match donors’ philanthropic goals with organizational priorities
  • Collaborate with Director of Development, CEO, board leaders, and other senior staff and volunteer leadership to secure major gifts for capital, programmatic, and general operating needs
  • Partner with Director of Development and Marketing and Communications team to plan and execute 3-4 annual giving appeals, targeting renewed and increase gifts across donor segments, including the annual Dinner-Less Dinner, The Ark’s signature “dinner-less” annual fundraiser
  • Work with Board Development Committee and other key volunteers to support volunteer fundraisers in soliciting leadership gifts for annual and long-term priorities
  • Support the development of regular donor cultivation and stewardship activities, including an annual report, cultivation and stewardship events, and other donor communications
  • Partner with Grants Manager, Development colleagues, and program and administrative colleagues to develop and write funding proposals and donor reports for individual donors

Work Requirements and Qualifications


  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 4+ years of successful professional fundraising experience
  • Experience soliciting leadership annual gifts of $5,000+ strongly preferred, as is experiencing managing board and high-level volunteers, and familiarity with the local Chicagoland Jewish community.


  • Ability to design, implement and execute a fundraising plan, including individualized cultivation, solicitation, and recognition strategies
  • Knowledge of and experience with various gifts methods, including program-restricted gifts, endowment, planned and deferred gifts
  • Active listener with exceptional written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong project management, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Enthusiastic initiative-taker with an ability to problem-solve, exercise sound judgment, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Positive, collaborative style, with the ability to effectively engage colleagues, volunteers, and donors
